By Aaron Humes: Police have arrested a suspect linked to the damage of a police surveillance camera in Southside Belize City.
Police formally charged 19-year-old Kyle Arana, a fisherman from Oleander Street, with damage to property; he remains in police custody as the investigation continues.
A Corporal of Police attached to the Public Safety Monitoring Unit at Eastern Division discovered that a bullet camera at the intersection of Flamboyant and Lavender Streets had been vandalized.
During his routine check on August 27, he noticed that the camera, which is crucial for monitoring public safety, was tilting downwards rather than capturing footage as intended. Upon reviewing footage, he identified a slim-built male, described as having a low haircut and distinctive tattoos seen climbing the camera pole on the night of August 23. This individual was observed using a hammer-like object to strike the camera, rendering it unusable. The damage, amounting to $2,040, included a 4K bullet camera and an emergency bell, both property of the Government of Belize.
