By Aaron Humes: After an uncomfortably long pause, Prime Minister John Briceño firmly denied any government involvement in the alleged abduction of Joseph Budna in Orange Walk Town on Friday night.

Not only was that obvious, he told reporters, but his government would never sanction such a thing. But his demeanor hardly suggested an ease or preparation to questions he should have known would be coming his way at the launch of Climate Week this morning.

But as to how Budna wound up in Guatemalan custody facing a resumption of the prison sentence he escaped in 2019 plus additional time for that escape, the P.M. deferred to the ongoing police investigation.

He allowed, however, that “The abduction of any one of our citizens is a serious matter…we know how to act accordingly in order to ensure that all our citizens can feel safe in our country,” citing previous conflicts with Mexico albeit on a smaller scale.

After asking the press to stop “feeding speculation,” he beat a hasty retreat, trailed by questions about how the Department’s investigation would be impartial considering they have been accused by Budna himself of involvement, as well as the Government’s attitude toward a man who has made hay of public, often vitriolic criticism of them.

The Department’s regular press briefing is set for 3 p.m. this afternoon in Belize City. It has not been announced whether Commissioner of Police Dr Richard Rosado will attend.
