By Zoila Palma: The undocumented immigrant population in the United States reached a record 14 million in 2023, according to new estimates from the Pew Research Center.
This marked a 19% increase from the previous year, with more than 40% of the total made up of immigrants who had temporary deportation protections under the Biden administration, such as asylum seekers and migrants released at the border with pending immigration court cases.
Pew’s estimates show that this group alone accounted for about 6 million people, CNN reports.
While the population swelled under Biden, early data suggest it may have declined in 2025 under President Donald Trump’s renewed hardline immigration agenda.
Since returning to office, Trump has expanded deportation raids and suspended protections for migrants from countries including Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.
The Pew report noted that many immigrants with deportation protections were in the process of seeking asylum, with around 2.6 million asylum applicants included in the 2023 count.
In total, undocumented immigrants made up 4.1% of the U.S. population in 2023, with most residing in six states: California, Texas, Florida, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois.
