By Zoila Palma: The Ministry of Health and Wellness is hosting a leadership and management workshop on August 21 and 22, 2025.
Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard addressed the health professionals saying that this is a defining moment for the Ministry.
“It is both an honor and a solemn responsibility to address you today as we open this Leadership and Management Workshop. Let me be clear from the outset: this gathering is not symbolic, nor is it simply another item on our agenda. This is a defining moment for the Ministry of Health and Wellness—a moment to confront the truth, to recommit ourselves, and to chart a higher standard of leadership and management,” Minister Bernard said.
“The Ministry exists for one ultimate purpose: to safeguard the health and wellbeing of every Belizean. Our mission speaks to leadership, policy, and service delivery that is inclusive, sustainable, and of the highest quality. But for that mission to have meaning, leadership must go beyond policy documents and mission statements. Leadership must be lived—consistently, courageously, and compassionately—every single day,” he added.
In addition, the Minister said that “Belize cannot and will not afford a Ministry where leadership is confused with command. Leadership is not about rank, position, or title. A boss commands authority; a leader earns respect. A boss instills fear; a leader builds trust. A boss holds power; a leader empowers others. That distinction is the line between stagnation and transformation.”
“That is why these two days matter. From the CEO, to Directors, to Technical Advisors, to Regional Managers, to every officer across administration and finance—we are all part of the leadership chain. I expect that we leave this workshop with more than promises on paper. I expect visible change in how we think, how we act, and how we engage each other,” he explained.
Minister Bernard encouraged everyone in the Ministry to speak up and support.
The Government of Belize stands for inclusion, fairness, and accountability. That must also be the standard within this Ministry.
“Our national frameworks—#planBelize and the Belize Health Sector Strategic Plan 2025–2034—are not distant aspirations. They are directives. Strategic Objective 1 is clear: strengthen leadership and governance in the MOHW. This is not optional. This is our duty. If we cannot model strong leadership within this Ministry, how can we ask the nation to trust us to lead them in health and wellness?,” the Minister stated.
