By Zoila Palma:  The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is closely monitoring Hurricane Erin as it begins transitioning into a post-tropical system, along with three additional disturbances currently moving across the Atlantic.

As of this morning, Erin was located about 300 miles southeast of Bermuda, with maximum sustained winds near 90 mph. The storm is moving northeast at 22 mph and is expected to pass south of Atlantic Canada before racing into the northern Atlantic.

While Erin is forecast to lose its tropical characteristics by tonight, it will remain a powerful hurricane-force system. Dangerous surf and rip currents are expected to continue along much of the U.S. East Coast for the next several days.

Meanwhile, a tropical wave east-northeast of the Leeward Islands is showing signs of organization.

Forecasters say the system has an 80% chance of developing into a tropical depression or tropical storm within 48 hours and is likely to strengthen further as it tracks northwest between the northern Leeward Islands and Bermuda.

Farther east, a tropical wave midway between Africa and the Windward Islands has weakened somewhat but still carries a 40% chance of short-term development and a 50% chance over the next week as it continues westward.

A third disturbance southwest of the Azores has lost strength and is not expected to develop.

Meteorologists continue to urge residents across the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the U.S. East Coast to monitor forecasts closely as the peak of hurricane season approaches.
