By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 19-year-old Belize City man accused of throwing a rock that seriously injured his 13-year-old neighbour’s left eye has been formally arraigned on charges of maim and throwing missiles.
The accused, Maurice Alvarez, a carpenter of Belize City’s Southside, allegedly hurled the stone at the minor on Thursday, August 14, 2025, striking her in the eye. The injury has left the child in need of surgery, according to police reports.
Alvarez appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Ludlow Black in Court #1, where he pleaded not guilty to both charges. He was granted bail of $2,500 with strict conditions: he must stay at least 100 feet away from the victim and her family, have no contact with them, and report weekly to the Mahogany Street Police Sub-Station. His next court date is set for October 20, 2025.
According to investigators, the girl was walking home when Alvarez allegedly confronted her and threw the rock. She was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, treated, and later discharged to seek specialist care for the serious eye injury.
Police arrested Alvarez two days later, on Saturday, August 16, 2025. A medico-legal form has been issued to the victim, but doctors are awaiting further evaluation as surgery will be required to repair the damage.
