By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Mahogany Heights construction worker is behind bars after pleading guilty to wounding a police officer during a checkpoint incident in Hattieville.

Thirty-three-year-old Alton Nicholson appeared on Monday before Magistrate Ludlow Black in Court #1, where he was charged with wounding a police officer on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Mile 15 on the George Price Highway.

Nicholson pleaded guilty with an explanation, claiming he was asleep at the back of a West Line bus when officers dragged him off without identifying themselves or explaining why. He said he resisted because the officers “manhandled” him, leaving him with a burst lip and other injuries.

Magistrate Black, however, noted that Nicholson’s account differed from police reports, which stated that he had been behaving disorderly on the bus, appeared intoxicated, and resisted when asked to exit. The officer reported that Nicholson pulled on his police jacket during the struggle, damaging it, and had to be subdued by officers.

Despite the conflicting versions, Nicholson’s guilty plea was accepted. As a first-time offender for wounding, he was fined $400 plus $5 court costs, due by September 30, or face four months’ imprisonment.

But Nicholson’s freedom was short-lived. An outstanding balance of $1,031.01 in old court fines resurfaced, and Magistrate Black ordered him to pay half—$500 forthwith. Unable to do so, Nicholson was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until payment is made.
