Cine Dominicano and Diario Libre report that Dominican director José Maria Cabral has made history with the inclusion of two of his films—feature film Tiguere (2024) and the documentary La 42 (2025)—at the New York Latino Film Festival, which takes place from September 13 to 21, 2025.

In the article “José María Cabral, primer director con dos películas en NY Latino Film Festival,” Diario Libre writes:

Dominican filmmaker José María Cabral made history at the New York Latino Film Festival (NYLFF), presented by Warner Brothers, by becoming the first director in the event’s 25 years to have two films selected in the same edition.

The selected productions are Tiguere (2024), which has toured prestigious international festivals since last year, and La 42 (2025), a documentary that had its world premiere at the renowned South by Southwest (SXSW) and has received excellent reviews at other festivals.

This double recognition is unprecedented at the NYLFF, a festival that celebrates the best of Latin American cinema and which this year commemorates its 25th anniversary.

According to a statement sent by his press office, Cabral, one of the most prominent voices in Dominican cinema in the last decade, is preparing for the national theatrical release of La 42, scheduled for this Thursday through Caribbean Cinemas.

Synopses (from IMDb):

La 42 (2025): On a vibrant Dominican street, dancers and artists chase stardom while battling police oppression. Their raw expression and rebellious spirit create an electrifying clash of culture, authority, and artistic freedom.

Tiguere (2024): A group of male adolescents are recruited by their parents into a boot camp to be forged into hustlers, players, Dominican “Tigueres”. Alberto is the head coach of this camp who decides that his son Pablo’s time has come to join the group.
