By Breaking Belize News Staff: Nyrere Parchue, the inmate who was shot on Tuesday morning while trying to escape from the Belize Central Prison, is now cripple and will never walk again after being shot to the neck while climbing the prison’s perimeter fence and subsequently falling to the ground, sustaining a fracture to the lumbar spine.

Breaking Belize News (BBN) was able to confirm Parchue’s condition with doctors who attended to him as well as prison staff. It is a tragic outcome for a man who has had a troubled few months and had previously suffered a shot to the head, which changed his life. Parchue was shot to the head in 2018 during a robbery attempt when he was reportedly working as a messenger. He became involved in a struggle with the robber and was shot in the sturggle.

His mother told the court in July that Parchue had a bullet lodged in his head from that incident and had never been the same after. Doctors also confirmed that Parchue suffers from encephalomalacia to the frontal lobe, which most likely went undiagnosed for years. This condition causes softening or degeneration of brain tissue due to injury or trauma such as a bullet wound to the head. The condition could also cause a patient to act erratically and violent, which could explain some of the troubles Parchue found himself in.

His mother had previously told the court that he had threatened to kill his whole family, causing them to worry. He was later charged for punching his 8-year-old nephew in the face. He had been facing traffic charges but old fines from a separate incident ultimately led to his remand in prison.

Parchue reportedly had a month left to serve but for attempting to escape he could face additional charges and get even more time added to his sentence. Now confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life, Parchue will ultimately be made to spend the rest of his time in prison despite his unfortunate circumstances. It is unclear when he will be discharged from the hospital but prison staff has indicated he will be returned to the Belize Central Prison at that time.
