By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man is behind bars after being sentenced to two months in prison for drug possession — his fourth conviction for similar offenses.
Jason Westby, 40, a resident of 1½ Miles George Price Highway, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Ludlow Black on Monday in Court #3, where he pleaded guilty to possession of 0.8 grams of crack cocaine and resisting lawful arrest during the incident that took place on Friday, August 1, 2025, on Mapp Street.
Westby told the court he hoped for a fine instead of jail time. However, Magistrate Black declined leniency due to Westby’s history of repeat drug offenses, noting that this latest arrest marked his fourth conviction for drug possession.
While the court acknowledged his early guilty plea and acceptance of responsibility, Magistrate Black emphasized that a pattern of behavior had emerged, which warranted a custodial sentence. He sentenced Westby to two months imprisonment for possession of crack cocaine.
On the resisting arrest charge, Westby was fined $200 plus $5 court costs, payable by November 3, 2025. In default, he will serve an additional two months in prison.
Westby was also ordered to pay $500 forthwith toward an outstanding $800 fine owed to the court from a previous matter.
His arrest was carried out by police on patrol, who reportedly encountered resistance while attempting to detain Westby for the drug offense.
