By Breaking Belize News Staff: Shantell Williams, 30, was sentenced on Wednesday to 6 years, 6 months, and 24 days in prison for the manslaughter of her ex-common-law husband, Louis Adolphus, 39, during a domestic dispute in 2022.
Williams was convicted on March 31, 2025, in a judge-only trial before Justice Derick Sylvester, who ruled that Williams was unjustified in using deadly force during a heated argument over a suspected affair.
The fatal stabbing occurred at #40 Currasow Street, Belize City, in the early hours of August 2, 2022. Williams told the court she confronted Adolphus after receiving a provocative message from a woman she believed to be his side partner. During the confrontation, she stabbed at him three times—claiming the final thrust to the neck was only meant to scare him. Adolphus bled out and later died from exsanguination, according to the post-mortem report.
Initially claiming self-defense, Williams said Adolphus had hit her with an umbrella and reached for a knife. However, the court found no lawful justification for her actions and found her guilty of manslaughter.
In determining the sentence, Justice Sylvester started with a baseline of 12 years, increased it to 13 years due to aggravating factors, then deducted time for mitigating circumstances, including Williams’ clean record and a favorable Social Inquiry Report. She was further credited with 161 days on remand, bringing the final sentence to just over six and a half years.
Williams will also undergo anger management counseling while incarcerated and will be eligible for parole after serving half of her sentence.
