By Zoila Palma: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Friday that deportation flights have begun from the controversial immigration detention center deep in the Everglades, nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz.”
Speaking near the site, DeSantis said roughly 100 detainees have already been flown out by the Department of Homeland Security, with more flights expected soon. “You’re going to see the numbers go up dramatically,” he said.
The remote facility, built rapidly over 10 square miles and surrounded by swamps, currently holds about 2,000 people and could double in size, AP reports.
DeSantis said its purpose is to speed up deportations, not long-term detention.
Critics have condemned the center as inhumane, while environmental and legal challenges are mounting.
Despite secrecy around flight destinations, officials say the Everglades site is now part of a growing national deportation network.
