By Breaking Belize News Staff: Jayme Marin, now 34, has been sentenced to 11 years, 10 months, and 16 days behind bars for the 2019 fatal stabbing of his cousin, Isaac Marin, and the attempted murder of another cousin, Carlos Marin, during a gruesome knife attack on Caye Caulker.

The incident unfolded on October 22, 2019, when a then 28-year-old Jayme reportedly told Carlos, “The devil wants your soul,” before returning with two knives and launching into a frenzied assault. As Carlos was being attacked, his younger brother Isaac awoke and tried to intervene—only to be fatally stabbed in the chest.

Jayme, who was later diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia and experiencing “command hallucinations,” had stopped taking his prescribed medication at the time of the incident. He was initially ruled unfit to stand trial but was later declared competent after a second evaluation by Dr. Michael Medina on April 25, 2025.

In a plea agreement with the Crown, Jayme Marin pleaded guilty to manslaughter for Isaac’s death and attempted murder for the attack on Carlos. This spared the family a full trial and the trauma of reliving the night’s events.

Justice Nigel Pilgrim started sentencing at 15 years but increased it to 18 years due to the severity of the attack, including the use of multiple weapons and the fact that it occurred in the presence of family. Mitigating factors—including Marin’s mental illness, remorse, lack of criminal infractions, and early guilty plea—led to several deductions, ultimately reducing the sentence to 11 years, 10 months, and 16 days. The sentences for both offenses will run concurrently.

The sentence is backdated to July 23, 2024, when Marin’s bail was revoked after he failed to attend court hearings and refused to take his medication. His father confirmed at the time that Jayme had stopped cooperating, prompting authorities to detain him.

Jayme Marin was represented by attorney Arthur Saldivar, while Crown Counsel Shanell Fernandez Peyrefitteappeared for the prosecution.

The tragic stabbing shook the tight-knit island community, and the emotional proceedings this week brought some closure to a family forever changed by the events of one haunting night.
