By Breaking Belize News Staff: An 18-year-old San Pedro resident is behind bars at the Belize Central Prison after being charged with grievous harm and use of deadly means of harm—accusations stemming from a violent assault on his own mother.
Carlos Giovanni Gomez, an unemployed resident of the San Mateo area, was arraigned on Monday before Magistrate Ludlow Black in Court #4. He was denied bail and remanded following charges relating to a brutal incident that took place on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
According to police, Gomez allegedly attacked his 56-year-old mother with a bush stick after she refused to give him money. Calderon told investigators she was sitting in front of her home when her son approached and made the request. As she attempted to find her house key to go inside, Gomez allegedly struck her left hand with the stick, causing her to fall. He then continued beating her until nearby residents intervened, restrained him, and took away the weapon.
Calderon was rushed to the San Pedro Polyclinic with visible facial abrasions and severe pain in her hand. She was later referred to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) in Belize City, where she underwent X-rays and surgery. She remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Gomez, who turned 18 just three months ago, was formally arrested and charged on Wednesday, July 16. He is expected to return to court on a future date as the case proceeds.
