By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Four high-octane matchups launch the first leg of the National Amateur Interdistrict Championship (NAIC) quarterfinals this weekend, as eight regional champions vie for semifinal berths and national glory.
Tut Bay vs Calcutta Bulls
In Belize City, Tut Bay FC defends home turf against Corozal’s Calcutta Bulls at 7:30 pm Saturday at the Marion Jones Sports Complex. Tut Bay sealed their quarterfinal ticket with a dramatic 2–1 extra-time win over Garage FC, after a tense 0–0 first leg stalemate. Goals by Calvin Thurton and Tom Moguel lifted them past a tough opponent in Independence.
Their visitors, Calcutta Bulls, mounted a stunning comeback from a 2–0 first-leg deficit to overwhelm San Marcos FC 3–0 in Corozal. Joshua Villanueva netted twice and Steven “Bredds” Baizar closed the scoring in a match that flipped the tie and set up this first-leg showdown in the two-game quarterfinal series.
Mid-South Vikings vs San Pedro Sharks
Simultaneously, Vikings FC welcome Ambergris’ Sharks FC to the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence at 7:30 pm on Saturday, July 19. The Mid-South champions clawed their way past Legends FC 6–5 on aggregate with an extra-time decider from Oscar Rodriguez, reversing a first-leg loss through sheer resilience.
The Sharks punched their ticket with a 3–1 second-leg win at home against St Matthews FC. Tory Guzman’s brace and Falden Carter’s stoppage-time strike sealed a 4–2 aggregate win, earning them a place in this two-legged quarterfinal clash.
Napoles vs Griga Conquerors
At Isidoro Beaton Stadium, Belmopan’s Napoles FC take on Griga Conquerors at 7:30 pm Saturday. Napoles edged San Jose Pumas 3–2 over two legs, holding a slim advantage after winning 2–1 away, then drawing 1–1 at home.
Conquerors advanced by nipping Seabulls FC 1–0 in Dangriga, thanks to a match-winner by Curtis Valerio. That followed a 2–2 draw in the first leg. Saturday’s meeting marks the first of two legs in a tightly contested quarterfinal pairing.
Yo Creek United vs Quinta’s Elite
Closing out the weekend, Yo Creek United FC host Cayo’s Quinta’s Elite FC on Sunday at 4:00 pm at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk. Yo Creek, Orange Walk’s finest, survived a thriller against Sarteneja FC. Despite losing 3–1 at home, Nazim Aldana’s overtime goal salvaged a 6–5 aggregate win after a 4–2 first-leg triumph.
Quinta’s Elite endured a rollercoaster path: an initial 4–0 loss to Survivors FC was voided due to roster infractions by both clubs. The decisive second match produced a 2–2 draw after extra time, and they squeaked through 8–7 in a sudden-death shootout. The Cayo champs’ Sunday visit kicks off a gritty two-leg battle with the Orange Walk champs.
With semifinal dreams on the line, this weekend’s first-leg fixtures promise explosive action across Belize.
