By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Premier Women’s League of Belize (PWLB) champions Sagitun Girlz FC opened their campaign at the UNCAF Women’s Interclub Championship with a narrow 3–2 loss to Panama’s Chorrillo FC on Thursday, July 17, at Estadio COS Sports Plaza in Panama City.

The match was a fiercely competitive encounter in which the Belizean champions’ displayed resilience and attacking flair. Chorrillo took a 1–0 lead before Sagitun equalized through Shante “Reds” Chacon in the 63rd minute. However, the Panamanian side responded with two more goals to go up 3–1. Jolene Aranda then pulled one back in injury time, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the defeat.

The result marks a promising start for Sagitun Girlz, who are determined to improve on last year’s eighth-place finish in the regional tournament. Their 2024 campaign saw them suffer heavy defeats to Costa Rica’s Alajuelense and El Salvador’s Alianza, but they showed growth in a close 3–2 loss to Guatemala’s Xinabajul.

This year’s tournament, held from July 17–24 in Panama, brings together top women’s clubs from across Central America. Sagitun Girlz earned their spot by winning the 2024–2025 PWLB title, finishing the season unbeaten and conceding only four goals. Their dominant semi-final performance included a 24–0 aggregate win over Cayo Dreamers, with Aranda scoring a double hat-trick in the second leg.

However, their journey to Panama has not been without challenges. Just days before departure, the team faced a major funding setback when the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) reduced its financial support from $10,000 to $5,000. The club issued a public appeal for emergency assistance, citing difficulties in covering airfare, lodging, and other logistical costs.

Despite the financial strain, Sagitun Girlz made it to Panama, determined to represent Belize with pride. Their performance against Chorrillo reflects the team’s fighting spirit and growing maturity on the international stage.
