By Rubén Morales Iglesias: With the clock ticking toward the UNCAF Women’s Interclub Championship in Panama, Belize’s Premier Women’s League of Belize (PWLB) national champions Sagitun GIRLZ FC have issued a plea for financial assistance to ensure their participation in the regional tournament. The club, representing Belize in Group A from July 17 to 23, face mounting travel costs and limited institutional support—putting their international campaign at serious risk.

In an open letter dated July 10, Sagitun GIRLZ expressed deep concern over the lack of response from government ministries and national sporting bodies. Despite repeated outreach, the club has received no confirmation of additional funding beyond a reduced $5,000 contribution from the Football Federation of Belize (FFB)—half of what was originally promised.

“No replies, no calls back just nothing. It’s disheartening,” the club stated.

⚠ Consequences of Non-Participation Failure to compete in the tournament could result in financial sanctions and potential blacklisting of Belizean women’s football clubs from future international events. The club emphasized that this is not just about one team—it’s about safeguarding the future of women’s football in Belize.

“This isn’t just about football. It’s about standing up for equality, commitment, and pride in Belizean talent,” Sagitun GIRLZ said, calling on private sponsors, community leaders, and international supporters to help bridge the funding gap.

⚽ A Deeper Concern While Sagitun GIRLZ have chosen not to publicly criticize the FFB, Breaking Belize News saw a copy of the initial letter which referenced the $5,000 budget cut—a detail later withdrawn out of concern that even the reduced funding might be rescinded. The PWLB, which replaced the National Amateur Women’s League (NAWL) and is administered by the FFB, places clubs in a difficult position: expected to operate autonomously, yet financially dependent on federation support.

Given the economic realities of Belizean football—especially in the women’s game—the FFB’s role should extend beyond tournament administration to active advocacy and financial backing. The silence from key institutions not only jeopardizes Sagitun GIRLZ’s participation but sends a troubling message about the value placed on women’s sport.
