By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Concacaf’s two giants, Mexico and the United States, are heading for yet another battle in the Gold Cup final, after both claimed narrow semifinal victories on Wednesday night.
At Levi’s Stadium in California, Mexico edged Honduras 1-0, with Raúl Jiménez providing the difference-maker in the 50th minute. The veteran striker latched onto a clever through ball from 16-year-old Gilberto Mora, who became the youngest player to register an assist at the tournament since 2013. Honduras fought back with a physical style that earned five yellow cards, but couldn’t break through Luis Malagón, who recorded his fourth consecutive clean sheet.
Earlier in the evening Luna. Guatemala pulled one back through Olger Escobar in the 78th minute, but a heroic stoppage-time save by Matt Freese ensured the Americans advanced to their ninth Gold Cup final.
With these results, Mexico and the United States will meet in the final for the eighth time in tournament history—a rivalry steeped in drama and passion. The much-anticipated decider kicks off Sunday, July 6, at NRG Stadium in Houston, in a rematch of the 2023 finale that saw Mexico prevail 1-0.
