By Aaron Humes: A tragic incident has shaken the tight-knit community of Caye Caulker, leaving residents mourning and demanding answers. 19-year-old Kevin de Paz, Belizean-American and a soon-to-be soldier in the U.S. Army, was fatally stabbed during a violent altercation in the heart of the island village.
The incident unfolded late Sunday night after what began as a casual outing for food escalated into violence involving multiple individuals, including two off-duty police officers. According to police sources, the events took a chaotic turn when a confrontation at a local fast-food stand drew the attention of the law enforcement officers.
Staff Officer Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith explained, “Two off-duty officers were present when they observed a golf cart stopping near the fast-food stand. One of the male occupants reportedly shoved an individual at the stand. The officers intervened, and the suspects left the scene. Shortly afterwards, the same group returned, leading to an altercation involving the off-duty officers and the occupants of the golf cart.”
Further details indicate that during this confrontation, Kevin de Paz was fatally stabbed. Police reports state that three individuals, including Kevin, were armed with knives. One officer was injured with a stab wound, and another officer sustained injuries during the chaos. Kevin’s friend, Canul, remains in stable condition, while another male participant, Nishan Allen, is reported to be in critical condition.
The police investigation remains ongoing, with police emphasizing the importance of a thorough inquiry. Commissioner of Police Dr Richard Rosado confirmed, “Both officers involved are currently in the right mental and physical state to perform their duties. However, the department will conduct a comprehensive investigation, and the case will be forwarded to the DPP for her directives.”
The Police Department have placed the officers on administrative leave pending the outcome of their inquiry. According to the Commissioner, the Department is also exploring measures to improve its preparedness, including providing non-lethal weapons and enhanced de-escalation training.
Kevin de Paz’s family, living abroad but connected to the island, has announced their intention to pursue legal action, seeking justice for their son’s death. Police have assured the public that accountability measures are in place and that justice will be served.
