By Zoila Palma: Galen University has launched a three-day Bioarchaeology workshop at its Central Farm Campus, offering students, tour guides, and community members an immersive introduction to the study of human remains in archaeological contexts.
Running from June 25 to 27, the workshop combines practical training with guided instruction from international experts.
Participants will work with high-quality skeletal casts—no real human remains—throughout the training.
Day one focuses on the basics of bioarchaeology, including human osteology and constructing biological profiles. On day two, participants engage in staged excavations to learn proper techniques for mapping and recovering burials.
The final day addresses the ethical responsibilities of working with human remains and explores how Maya bioarchaeology informs both historical understanding and modern community engagement.
The workshop is funded by the Wenner-Gren Foundation and led by Dr. Kirsten Green Mink of Idaho State University, along with Saige Kelmelis and Crystal Sheedy of the University of South Dakota.
It offers a rare opportunity to develop both practical skills and critical perspectives in the growing field of bioarchaeology.
