International News: United States and Iran hold talks amid escalating Israel conflict, Diplomats say

By Zoila Palma:  Iranian and U.S. officials have held direct talks in recent days as tensions rise following Israeli strikes on Iran, diplomats told Reuters.

U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi spoke by phone several times this week, marking their most substantive contact since negotiations began in April.

According to multiple diplomats, Araqchi warned Tehran would not return to nuclear talks unless Israel halts its attacks, which began June 13. Discussions reportedly included a rejected U.S. proposal to move Iran’s uranium enrichment abroad under a regional consortium.

A regional diplomat said Iran may show flexibility on its nuclear program if Washington pressures Israel to stop the bombing. Neither U.S. nor Iranian officials have publicly commented.

The renewed dialogue comes as President Trump weighs whether to involve U.S. forces in Israel’s military campaign, while European powers push to revive diplomacy.

Araqchi is expected to meet EU officials and the E3 (Britain, France, and Germany) in Geneva on Friday.
