Hurricane Erick makes landfall in Southern Mexico, brings dangerous flooding

By Zoila Palma:  Hurricane Erick moved inland over southern Mexico bringing heavy rains, strong winds, and the threat of flash flooding to coastal and mountainous areas.

As of 12:00 p.m. CST, the center of Hurricane Erick was located about 60 miles (100 km) north-northwest of Punta Maldonado and 60 miles east-northeast of Acapulco, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

 The storm is moving northwest at approximately 12 mph (19 km/h) and is expected to continue on this path before dissipating later tonight.

Erick is currently sustaining maximum winds of 75 mph (120 km/h), with stronger gusts, especially in higher terrain where winds can be significantly stronger than at sea level. Rapid weakening is forecast throughout the day.

A Hurricane Warning remains in effect from Acapulco to Puerto Escondido, while a Tropical Storm Warning is in place west of Acapulco to Tecpan de Galeana.

Hurricane-force winds and dangerous conditions will continue for several more hours in the warning areas. Torrential rainfall is already causing flooding and may trigger landslides in mountainous regions.

Residents are urged to follow local emergency guidance and remain indoors until the storm passes.
