By Zoila Palma: Belize is taking a major step toward digital health modernization with the rollout of the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision (ICD-11) as part of its Universal Health Coverage Partnership (UHC-P) initiative.
Led by the Ministry of Health & Wellness in collaboration with PAHO/WHO Belize, the ICD-11 is being integrated into the Clinical Data Exchange Platform (CDEP) to strengthen the country’s health information systems.
The move is expected to enhance data accuracy, standardization, and interoperability across platforms such as the Belize Health Information System (BHIS) and the National Health Insurance’s RAWA system.
Health professionals—including medical coders, IT specialists, nurses, and statistical officers—are currently undergoing specialized training in ICD-11.
The training ensures that Belize builds the local expertise needed to sustain a digitally connected, data-driven health system.
