By Zoila Palma: Iranian state television on Tuesday urged citizens to delete WhatsApp, accusing the messaging app—without presenting evidence—of sharing user data with Israel, AP reports.

WhatsApp, owned by Meta, dismissed the allegations as false, stating it does not track user messages or share bulk information with any government.

WhatsApp said it was “concerned these false reports will be an excuse for our services to be blocked at a time when people need them the most.”

WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption, making it impossible for third parties to read private messages.

However, experts note metadata can still reveal user behavior, and concerns over data sovereignty persist in countries like Iran.

The platform had been widely used in Iran despite past bans. Access was previously blocked during 2022 protests but restored late last year.
