By Zoila Palma: Tropical Storm Erick is strengthening off the southern coast of Mexico and is expected to become a hurricane by Wednesday, according to the National Hurricane Center.
As of 6:00 a.m. CST, Erick was located about 430 miles (695 km) southeast of Punta Maldonado, Mexico, moving west-northwest at 12 mph (19 km/h).
The storm is forecast to slow slightly and approach the coasts of Oaxaca and Guerrero by Wednesday night.
A Hurricane Watch is in effect from Bahías de Huatulco to Punta Maldonado, while a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued from east of Bahías de Huatulco to Salina Cruz.
Erick currently has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 km/h), with further strengthening expected in the coming days.
The storm could bring 5 to 10 inches of rain, with isolated amounts up to 15 inches, across Chiapas, Oaxaca, Guerrero, and parts of coastal Guatemala — raising serious concerns about life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in mountainous regions.
Interior areas of Southeast Mexico, El Salvador, and parts of Guatemala could see 2 to 6 inches of rain.
Residents in affected regions are urged to monitor updates and prepare for hazardous conditions.
