CXC mourns the passing of Professor Emerita Hazel Simmons-McDonald OBE

By Aaron Humes: Professor Emerita Hazel Simmons-McDonald OBE, academic, advocate for education, and the first Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of The UWI Open Campus, has died.

The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) is grieving the loss, with registrar/CEO Dr Wayne Wesley expressing in a statement: “Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched—both in the classroom and beyond. She was held in the highest regard by all who had the privilege of working with her.”

Professor Simmons-McDonald served on the Council, the Board of Governors, and the School Examinations Committee (SEC), showcasing her dedication to transforming educational standards.

Professor Simmons-McDonald’s expertise in Caribbean linguistics and culture significantly empowered countless students. Her contributions to CXC syllabus development in language studies and her commitment to producing educational textbooks for CSEC and CAPE laid the groundwork for enhanced learning opportunities. “Her commitment to preserving and sharing the rich tapestry of the Caribbean helped to deepen collective understanding,” noted Dr. Wesley.

Dr Wesley further highlighted her efforts in making higher education and lifelong learning more accessible. Her significant role in the development of the regional secondary education assessment and certification system further illustrated her dedication. On behalf of the Chairman of CXC, Sir Hilary Beckles, and the entire Council, Management, and Staff, Dr Wesley extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and former students of Professor Emerita Hazel Simmons-McDonald during this difficult time.
