By Zoila Palma: Belizean officials met with representatives of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) in Brazil this week to strengthen their partnership and accelerate access to climate finance.
Minister Osmond Martinez, CEO Carlos Pol (Ministry of Economic Development), and CEO Henry Anderson (Development Finance Corporation) held a bilateral meeting with Kristin Lang, GCF Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean.
The GCF, one of Belize’s closest climate finance allies, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Belize and other Caribbean nations in achieving their climate goals. Discussions focused on strategic priorities and removing barriers to accessing funding.
In a move aimed at improving efficiency, the GCF announced a new six-week response time for all concept note submissions. This faster turnaround is expected to significantly reduce delays in project approvals.
The Belize delegation highlighted challenges in mobilizing both public and private sector participation in climate finance, stressing that incremental progress is no longer enough.
