By Zoila Palma: On Friday, June 6, 2025, the Belize Police Department held a closing ceremony for the first cohort of its Sergeant Development Course at the National Police Training Academy Compound in Belmopan.
The three-week training, which ran from May 19 to June 6, saw 28 sergeants successfully complete the program.
The course aimed to standardize the roles and responsibilities of sergeants across the department while refreshing their skills in key areas of policing.
The first two weeks featured presentations by senior police officers and civilian experts. Participants also underwent training in defensive tactics and firearms to reinforce the proper use of force in line with departmental policies and Belizean law.
Additional sessions covered a wide range of supervisory and operational topics, including team building, conflict resolution, case file management, identification procedures, and handling of evidence.
These components are intended to strengthen leadership, decision-making, and accountability among mid-level officers.
At the closing ceremony, the top-performing participants were recognized for their achievements. Sgt. Genaro Samos earned first place, followed by Sgt. Kacey-Ann Requena in second.
A three-way tie for third place included Sgts. Burnell Flowers, Zamir Noh, and Santiago Perez.
