By Zoila Palma: Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe remains in critical condition after being shot in the head during a rally in Bogotá on Saturday, ABC reports.
The 39-year-old conservative senator underwent emergency brain surgery but has shown minimal response, doctors said.
Uribe was attacked at close range in the capital’s Modelia neighborhood.
Authorities arrested a 15-year-old suspect at the scene. The teen, now in custody, is being treated for a leg injury.
The assassination attempt has shocked the country and reignited concerns over political violence. Hundreds gathered outside Uribe’s hospital to pray, with some blaming President Gustavo Petro for fostering a hostile political climate. Petro condemned the attack and urged against politicizing it.
Uribe’s lawyer accused the National Protection Unit of ignoring repeated requests to bolster the candidate’s security. The Attorney General acknowledged that minors are increasingly used in violent crimes and stressed the need to address their recruitment by armed groups.
Uribe launched his presidential campaign last October amid growing tensions between Petro and the opposition over stalled reforms.
