By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean cycling icon Roque Matus once again demonstrated why he’s long been considered a force in regional racing, claiming an impressive 3rd place Masters C (50+) in the overall standings at the Punta Cana Grand Prix in the Dominican Republic over the weekend.
Matus’s campaign began with a strong second-place result on Saturday in the 60.1-kilometer El Tobogán race. He followed that up on Sunday by securing third place in the 30.6-kilometer Circuit Criterium, rounding out an exceptional weekend of racing. His combined efforts across the two events propelled him to overall third place.
Held in the sun-drenched resort town on the Dominican Republic’s eastern tip, the Punta Cana Grand Prix drew elite riders from 15 countries across the region. Matus’s achievement places him among the top competitors in the Caribbean region.
“The Cycling Federation of Belize would like to congratulate Roque Matus on placing 3rd today in the Grand Prix of Punta Cana. He also placed 3rd overall… Congrats again Roque,” the Cycling Federation of Belize said, sharing the news on social media.
