By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belmopan Capital City Kings claimed their first victory of the Belize Premier Basketball League (BPBL) season with an 85-75 win over the Belize City Thunderbolts on Friday night. The Kings, now 1-2, snapped their two-game losing streak, while the Thunderbolts (2-3) suffered their third consecutive loss after opening the season 2-0.
Kings take control late
Brandon Flowers led the charge for the Kings, scoring 23-points performance while adding 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Julian Theissen was dominant in the paint, securing a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while contributing 1 assist and 2 offensive rebounds to keep Belmopan in control.
On the Thunderbolts’ side, Tyrone Hall was the standout, putting up 22 points and pulling down 17 rebounds, while adding 1 steal. Victor Evans chipped in 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists, showing his versatility on both ends of the court. Meanwhile, Alejandro Baptist added another double-double with 12 points and 17 rebounds for Belize City, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Kings’ momentum.
Strong finishing push
With the game still within reach entering the fourth quarter, the Kings stepped up defensively, pressuring the Thunderbolts into difficult shots and forcing key turnovers. Jamaal Harris provided additional offensive firepower, finishing with 15 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals, while knocking down three three-pointers at crucial moments.
Jayden Lopez played a key role inside, grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking 3 shots, ensuring the Kings maintained their defensive edge. Shane Pratt also made an impact with 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists, supporting Belmopan’s rebounding efforts.
Punta Gorda Panthers win other Friday night game
In the other Friday night matchup, the Punta Gorda Panthers (1-1) secured their first win of the season with an 84-71 victory over the Corozal Cerros Suns. The Suns, now 1-2, couldn’t keep pace with the Panthers’ offensive surge, which saw them take control in the second half.
