By Zoila Palma: Just days after stepping down from his advisory role in the Trump administration, Elon Musk is mounting a public campaign against the Republican-backed tax and spending bill that forms the core of Donald Trump’s policy agenda.
Musk took to X, his social media platform, urging Americans to call Congress and demand the bill be scrapped, calling it a “disgusting abomination” that would drive up the national debt.
The legislation, already passed in the House, now faces an uncertain fate in the Senate, where just four GOP defections could sink it, NBC reports.
Trump has yet to publicly respond, though aides say he was “caught off guard” by Musk’s opposition. The billionaire had been a close ally, even receiving a high-profile farewell at the White House. But tensions have grown, particularly over the bill’s rollback of electric vehicle tax credits, which are crucial to Musk’s Tesla and clean energy ventures.
Behind the scenes, Musk lobbied House Speaker Mike Johnson to preserve those credits, arguing their removal jeopardizes U.S. energy independence. Meanwhile, Trump allies bristled at Musk’s not-so-subtle threat that Republicans supporting the bill could face political consequences in 2026.
While Musk’s influence among voters is debated, his massive campaign spending power and business clout make him a formidable voice—even outside the administration.
