By Zoila Palma:  A large cloud of dust from the Sahara Desert is currently blanketing the Caribbean and is expected to reach the United States later this week, CBS reports.

The plume has already covered parts of Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, with weather radars forecasting its movement toward Florida by mid-week.

The dust will then spread to other southeastern states, including Georgia, the Carolinas, Texas, and Louisiana by Friday. A smaller plume reached Florida over the weekend, with dust still lingering in the air on Monday.

This event is part of the annual Saharan Air Layer phenomenon, which carries dust from North Africa across the Atlantic. Meteorologists say dust activity typically peaks between late June and mid-August, with new plumes emerging every few days and traveling as far west as Texas.

In addition to the incoming Saharan dust, several U.S. states are also facing deteriorating air quality due to wildfire smoke drifting south from Canada.

Over 100 wildfires were burning out of control across the country as of Tuesday, further compounding atmospheric concerns across the region.
