By Breaking Belize News Staff: The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins today, June 1st, and will run through November 30th. Forecasters are urging residents across the region, including Belize, to stay alert and begin preparing early as the season is expected to be more active than normal.
According to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), there is a 60% chance of an above-average season this year. Forecasters expect between 13 to 19 named storms, with 6 to 10 becoming hurricanes. Of those, 3 to 5 are predicted to be major hurricanes—Category 3 or stronger.
The hurricane season peaks between mid-August and mid-October, but officials say the most dangerous storms can form and rapidly intensify at any time. With sea surface temperatures already warmer than usual, the risk for sudden, high-intensity storms is elevated.
Belize remains vulnerable due to its position within the Atlantic Basin, which includes the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.
The official list of storm names for the 2025 season includes: Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dexter, Erin, Fernand, Gabrielle, Humberto, Imelda, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Nestor, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastian, Tanya, Van, and Wendy.
Residents are reminded to have a family emergency plan, stock up on essential supplies, and review insurance policies. Officials stress that early preparation saves lives. Updates and safety resources are available on NEMO’s website and NOAA’s official hurricane preparation page.
