By Breaking Belize News Staff: After years of delays due to mental health concerns, 32-year-old Jayme Marin has been deemed fit to stand trial for murder and attempted murder, following a psychiatric evaluation conducted on April 25, 2025 by Dr. Michael Medina. As a result, Justice Nigel Pilgrim has scheduled his trial to begin next Thursday, June 5, 2025.
Marin, a resident of Caye Caulker, is accused of the 2014 stabbing death of his cousin Isaac Marin and the attempted murder of Carlos Marin, Isaac’s brother. The violent incident occurred on October 22, 2014 on the island.
Initially, Marin had been found unfit to stand trial after a prior evaluation revealed he was experiencing active religious delusions, including claims of receiving instructions from divine figures. That assessment was presented in court on March 25, 2025 by Dr. Crystal Ke. His attorney, Arthur Saldivar, had argued for leniency and treatment options, citing Marin’s ongoing mental health struggles.
However, the latest evaluation by Dr. Medina has overruled the earlier diagnosis, stating Marin is now mentally capable of participating in his trial. With that confirmation, the court is moving forward.
Marin had previously been out on bail for nearly four years, but it was revoked in 2024 after he failed to appear in court. His father, who signed as surety, informed the court that Marin had stopped taking his prescribed medication and was uncooperative, leading to his return to prison.
Marin remains on remand at the Belize Central Prison and appeared virtually for his latest court hearing. His long-delayed trial will finally proceed next week in the High Court.
