By Rubén Morales Iglesias: At the opening of the National Agricultural and Trade Show in Belmopan on Friday, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) celebrated Belize’s thriving agricultural spirit by recognizing—and sashing—the three farmers of the year. In a ceremony that drew farmers, innovators, and dignitaries alike, Gregorio Esquivel was recognized as the 2025 Farmer of the Year, Noemi Requena as the 2025 Woman Farmer of the Year, and Juan Ricardo Carrillo as the 2025 Junior Farmer of the Year.
Representing Corozal’s Consejo Village, Gregorio Esquivel impressed MAFSE with his unwavering commitment to sustainable and innovative farming practices. With over 30 years of experience, the 44-year-old manages 67 acres of land—30 of which are developed for mixed farming that includes various crops, livestock, and apiculture. Esquivel’s diverse production ranges from watermelons and vegetables to a host of fruit trees like plantains, limes, and coconuts. His strategic use of water resources, minimal use of pesticides, and adherence to best practices in crop rotation, fertilization, and harvest timing place him as a leader in responsible land stewardship.
From Toledo District comes Noemi Requena, whose pioneering work in regenerative agriculture has set her apart. Originally from San Pedro Columbia Village and now residing in Punta Gorda Town, Requena’s innovative approach to farming incorporates methods such as inga alley cropping, green manuring, and vermicomposting. She also produces her own biofertilizers, ensuring the long-term productivity and sustainability of her diverse operation—which features a variety of vegetables, fruit trees, and livestock. Despite a busy schedule that includes family care, education, and mentorship, Requena continues to inspire other women in a field traditionally dominated by men. Her contributions to soil conservation and sustainable land management are in line with the Ministry of Agriculture’s vision.

Celebrating the promise of the future, 25-year-old Juan Ricardo Carrillo from San Lazaro in the Orange Walk District was named the 2025 Junior Farmer of the Year. Growing up in an agricultural family, Carrillo’s passion for farming was ignited at a young age, leading him to commit to farming full-time by the age of 15. His progressive farming methods—ranging from the use of natural fertilizers and biological pest control to the integration of livestock such as poultry, sheep, and cattle—exemplify a holistic approach to sustainability. With steadfast support from his wife, Carla Linet Carrillo, Ricardo’s dedication to modern and efficient farming practices exemplifies the kind of farmer the Ministry of Agriculture wants younger farmers to emulate.
The sashing of these three visionary farmers at the National Agricultural and Trade Show not only celebrated their individual successes but also reflects MAFSE’s commitment to fostering innovation and sustainable practices across the agricultural sector. Their achievements serve as a powerful reminder that, with dedication and modern strategies, Belizean agriculture can continue to thrive—ensuring food security, economic vitality, and environmental stewardship for generations to come.
