By Zoila Palma: Today, Belize joins the global community in observing World No Tobacco Day under the theme #UnmaskingTheAppeal, a campaign aimed at exposing the tactics used by the tobacco and nicotine industries to market harmful products, particularly to young people.
The annual observance, spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO), highlights the dangers of tobacco use and the deceptive marketing strategies that target vulnerable populations. This year’s focus calls on individuals, communities, and governments to stand united against the influence of the tobacco industry and to advocate for a healthier, smoke-free future.
World No Tobacco Day serves as a platform to educate the public on the health risks associated with tobacco use, the industry’s practices, and ongoing global efforts to curb the tobacco epidemic. It also empowers individuals to claim their right to a healthy life and protect future generations from the devastating effects of tobacco.
The initiative was established in 1987 when the World Health Assembly passed Resolution WHA40.38, initially designating April 7, 1988, as the first “World No-Smoking Day.” A year later, Resolution WHA42.19 made 31 May the official date for World No Tobacco Day, now observed annually around the world.
