By Aaron Humes: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has expressed unwavering support for Belize’s teachers, public officers, and essential service workers in response to the government’s recent salary proposals, which they label as inadequate. This solidarity comes amid growing tensions leading to potential industrial action.
In a statement, the UDP criticized the People’s United Party (PUP) government for failing to honor financial commitments made prior to the elections. Despite the Prime Minister’s claims of a “booming” economy during the recent budget debate, the UDP argues that the economic recovery has not translated into fair compensation for those instrumental in the nation’s post-COVID-19 recovery.
The party emphasized that while high-ranking officials are receiving substantial salary increases of 15-20 percent the demand for an 8.5 percent raise from teachers and public officers is comparatively both modest and justifiable.
The UDP reiterated that during the 2020 campaign, the PUP pledged a 20 percent salary increase, along with improved working conditions and better training opportunities for public sector workers. However, since taking office, they have faced salary cuts, freezing of increments, and a failure to keep pace with the rising cost of living.
“Belizean teachers and public officers are at a breaking point. The UDP stands firmly with them as they demand dignity and respect,” the statement added. The party acknowledges that while industrial action may lead to temporary disruptions, the long-term stability of the nation depends on equitable treatment for these essential workers.
The UDP urged the Prime Minister to reconsider his stance and return to his commitment to protect the interests of those he once supported. They have called on all Belizeans to show solidarity and patience during this critical period, emphasizing that the welfare of one group impacts the entire country. “Belizeans deserve better,” concluded the statement, echoing the sentiments of many who continue to advocate for fair treatment in challenging times.
