By Aaron Humes: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has publicly allied itself with certain members of the Peoples’ Constitution Commission (PCC) expressing serious concerns about transparency and accountability in the ongoing Belize Constitution Amendment Project. This statement comes in the aftermath of discussions related to the final report submitted to the Office of the Prime Minister on May 16.

The Opposition says the controversy arose during the months leading up to the final report’s completion. Initially, the PCC made significant efforts to discuss and refine a draft report during four meetings held between November 4 and November 16, 2024. However, the second draft presented to the Commissioners on March 27, was criticized for failing to address key issues raised during these discussions and for including items that had not been previously debated.

Commissioners expressed frustration at a lack of engagement in the amendment process, indicating that their input on stakeholder recommendations would be relegated to an addendum rather than integrated into the final report. A significant gap in meetings lasting over six months heightened mistrust among the members, leading to allegations of corruption regarding the final document.

The UDP also repeated its qualms over the appointment of Anthony Chanona as the chair of the Commission, calling into question the appropriateness of his leadership given that he is related to a sitting cabinet minister overseeing the project.

Furthermore, the UDP emphasized the financial aspect of the project, highlighting the more than two million dollars of taxpayer money spent on what they deem as a mismanaged endeavor. Rather than continuing down what they perceive as a failed path, the UDP urges the Prime Minister to own up to the situation, apologize to the public, and take decisive action against those they believe responsible for the debacle, including pertinent ministers involved.

The report, per legislation by the Government, will be delayed in its formal presentation for at least a year before a referendum is ultimately called.
