By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City police officer caught on viral video discharging his firearm into the air has been arraigned and granted bail in the sum of $1,000. The incident occurred on Antelope Street Extension on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

The officer, 43-year-old Richard Gillett of a Dean Street address, was charged with a single count of discharging a firearm in public—a 9mm Lugar pistol with serial number 38641131.

Initially, Gillett’s charge was filed under the Firearms Act, which would have made bail impossible at the Magistrate’s Court level. However, a revision to the charge under the Summary Jurisdiction Act allowed bail to be considered. With no objection from the police prosecutor, Magistrate Ludlow Black granted bail, setting the next court date for July 24, 2025.

Gillett, who was unrepresented at the time of arraignment, has since retained the services of attorney Richard “Dickie” Bradley. In a brief interview outside the courtroom—after missing the arraignment due to a mix-up with the court book—Bradley said he hopes the charge will be withdrawn and handled internally under the new Commissioner of Police (COMPOL).

According to Bradley, his client acted under threat and did not aim the firearm at anyone. “There’s more to the incident than what the viral video shows,” he added, suggesting crucial context was missing from public view.

The case remains under scrutiny as the July court date approaches.
