By Zoila Palma: The Belize Police Department is launching a major surveillance expansion with plans to install 1,000 CCTV cameras across the country.
The initiative is part of a broader push to enhance public safety and leverage technology to prevent and solve crimes.
Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa said the rollout has already begun, marking what he called one of the department’s most ambitious goals for the year.
“The biggest splash so to speak for this year is going to be the introduction of 1,000 CCTV cameras,” Musa said. “We are already set up here in the Belmopan area. I think when you came into Belmopan you might have seen them at the roundabouts. We are establishing a headquarters here in Belmopan for the camera room along with BTL. They will be the service providers and so we’re growing exponentially, I think by some 400% in the number of cameras.”
Currently, the country has approximately 200 surveillance cameras in operation.
Musa emphasized that the dramatic increase will significantly boost the department’s ability to respond to and investigate criminal activity. He noted that surveillance footage—both public and private—has proven instrumental in solving many crimes in recent years.
This technological upgrade is part of a wider effort by the police department to modernize its crime-fighting tools and strategies.
“We just want to grow in terms of our use of these assets, these tools, like innovation and technology, because we have seen where a bulk of our crimes are solved with cameras,” Musa said.
