By Zoila Palma: The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority Workers Union (KHMHAWU) has announced the start of industrial action in response to a prolonged deadlock in pension negotiations with the Government of Belize.
Frustrated by months of stalled discussions, the union is ramping up pressure in what it calls a fight for fairness and long-term security for its members.
In a press release, the union described the government’s inaction as a “troubling disregard” for healthcare professionals who have served with dedication and sacrifice. “The pension issue is not merely a matter of finances — it is a matter of fairness, dignity, and long-term security,” the union stated.
Beginning Thursday, May 29, KHMHA staff will wear union-branded and “Gimme Mi Pension” T-shirts as a symbolic show of unity.
On Friday, May 30, the union will escalate to Level 7 industrial action, which includes peaceful demonstrations, a go-slow approach at work, and increased media engagement.
If the stalemate persists, the union has outlined a phased escalation plan that includes a “Work to Rule” approach and could culminate in a 21-day strike notice. “These steps represent a measured and lawful progression toward protecting the rights and futures of all KHMHA staff members,” the statement read.
Despite the planned actions, the union emphasized its commitment to patient care and reiterated its willingness to return to the negotiating table. “KHMHAWU remains open to meaningful dialogue, but we will not stand idle while our members’ futures hang in the balance,” it said.
The union is urging the government to re-engage in talks with urgency and is calling on the public for support as healthcare workers take a stand for what they believe is a matter of justice and respect.
