By Zoila Palma: Prime Minister John Briceño met today with Eri Arifueya, Parliamentary Vice Minister in Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a courtesy visit that underscored the longstanding diplomatic ties between Belize and Japan.
“Our courtesy visit discussed issues of freedom, democracy, justice and human rights, the effects of climate change on both our countries. We expressed commitment to our mutual steadfast support and friendship as partners,” said Prime Minister Briceño.
The visit comes as 2025 marks key milestones in the Belize–Japan relationship: the 25th anniversary of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) office in Belize and the launch of the JICA volunteer program in the country.
It also commemorates the 60th anniversary of the JICA volunteer initiative globally.
The meeting reaffirmed shared values and a commitment to deepening cooperation on global and regional challenges.
