By Zoila Palma: In celebration of the United Nations’ proclamation of 2025 as the International Year of Cooperatives, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise has announced the launch of the country’s first Agricultural Co-operative of the Year competition.
The initiative, developed by the Department of Co-operatives and funded by the GEF-Small Grants Programme Belize of UNDP, aims to spotlight the critical role agricultural co-operatives play in national development.
The competition evaluates co-operatives based on innovation, governance and participation, identity, sustainability, capital, and legal framework.
Following field evaluations and interviews conducted in May 2025 by a judging panel from GEF-Small Grants Programme Belize and the Belize Enterprise for Sustainable Technology (BEST), two finalists have emerged:
- Concepcion Vegetable Farmers Co-operative from Concepcion Village, Corozal
- Sayab Farmers Co-operative from San Antonio Village, Cayo
The winner will be announced and honored at the National Agriculture and Trade Show (NATS) 2025.
The Ministry and the National Agriculture and Trade Show Organizing Committee approved the competition as part of the wider effort to promote co-operatives’ contributions to social and economic progress, in alignment with the global recognition of 2025 as a year dedicated to cooperative enterprise.
