By Zoila Palma: The bioeconomy is the most powerful tool to transform agriculture and rural development in Latin America, experts agreed at the 2025 International Conference of the Latin American Bioeconomy Network, hosted by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).
Over 150 participants from across the region, including scientists, policymakers, and business leaders, gathered to discuss how science, innovation, and sustainable practices can unlock the region’s potential in bio-based industries.
IICA Director General Manuel Otero said Latin America’s rich biodiversity and biomass could drive economic growth if paired with innovation and environmental sustainability.
Speakers emphasized the role of biotechnology, local knowledge, and value-added production in boosting rural economies and reducing waste. The event also highlighted bioeconomy’s potential to create jobs and narrow the rural-urban gap.
UNESCO and the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) voiced strong support, calling the bioeconomy essential to confronting climate, biodiversity, and economic challenges.
