By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 36-year-old Rhaburns Alley resident and LIU employee, Louis Mervin Armstrong, was fined $1,000 by the Belize City Magistrate’s Court after pleading guilty to possession of 87 grams of marijuana.
The drugs were discovered in an abandoned yard next to Armstrong’s residence during a police operation on Monday, May 12. According to police, a K-9 unit was deployed during a search at #5 Rhaburns Alley, and Armstrong voluntarily led officers to the stash hidden near a rusty zinc fence.
In court, Armstrong admitted the marijuana was his, despite it not being found directly on his property. “The canine dog would have found it anyways,” he told the Senior Magistrate. He also pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of possession simplicita, which was accepted by the prosecution.
Armstrong narrowly avoided a much steeper penalty. He was initially charged with possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply—a charge akin to drug trafficking that carries a $10,000 fine and up to three years in prison. However, due to his guilty plea and the prosecution’s acceptance of the lesser charge, he was spared the mandatory minimum.
The court noted Armstrong has four prior drug-related convictions. His $1,000 fine, along with a $5 cost of court fee, must be paid by September 30, 2025, or he will face 10 months in prison.
