By Zoila Palma: Uruguay’s beloved former president José “Pepe” Mujica, known globally as the “world’s poorest president,” has died at 89 after a battle with cancer, AFP reports.
Tributes poured in across Latin America for the ex-guerrilla, admired for his humility, progressive politics, and simple lifestyle.
President Yamandú Orsi announced 3 days of national mourning, calling Mujica “a guide and leader.” His body will lie in state at the legislative palace on Wednesday.
Mujica, who ruled from 2010 to 2015, donated most of his salary to charity and lived on a modest farm with his wife and a three-legged dog. He legalized abortion, gay marriage, and recreational cannabis, making Uruguay a regional pioneer.
A former Marxist guerrilla with the Tupamaros, Mujica spent 13 years in prison, much of it under torture during the country’s dictatorship. After his release, he entered politics, eventually becoming a symbol of honesty and humility in leadership.
Global leaders from Mexico to Spain praised his legacy. Brazil’s President Lula said his “human greatness transcended borders.”
Mujica asked to be buried on his farm, beside his dog.
