By Aaron Humes: The Government and People of Belize have extended warm congratulations to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on his election as Supreme Pontiff.
The former Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost is American-born but based in Italy.
“Belize joins the Catholic community and the world in prayer for peace, unity, and hope under his pastoral guidance. We look forward to deepening our partnership with the Holy See in education and social development,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement said.
Belize is majority Roman Catholic but the local church is without a leader following the passing of Bishop Lawrence Nicasio in January; auxiliary Bishop Christopher Glancy is acting as leader.
