By Aaron Humes: The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) has issued a clarion call to teachers and public sector workers to gather in solidarity for a demonstration against what they deem injustices imposed by the Briceño administration. The rally is slated for Friday, bringing together various unions to advocate for the rights and needs of educators and public service employees.

President Nadia Caliz, in an address to members, acknowledged the importance of keeping schools open while emphasizing the urgent need for collaboration by local education leaders with the Ministry of Education to address outstanding demands, particularly concerning income tax reconciliations and increments for teachers. “If they can cooperate with the Ministry to keep schools open on Friday, they should also be able to work with them to address teachers’ demands,” Caliz stated.

Amid preparations for the demonstration, Caliz cautioned members about the potential consequences of their actions, reminding them that participating in the protest may result in not being paid for the day spent outside the classroom. “You have to be prepared to take the stand you voted for,” she urged, encouraging teachers to inform parents and students about their absence while reinforcing their legal rights to hold the protest.

Dean Flowers, the President of the Public Service Union (PSU), separately stressed the importance of national support at the rally, reminding that a strong turnout would demonstrate to the government the urgent need to address the pressing issues faced by educators and public servants alike. “Every parent who says they love their children should be out there,” Flowers remarked.

Additionally, Flowers raised concerns over a coincidental training scheduled by the Ministry of Public Service on the same day as the protest, urging public officers to prioritize the demonstration over attendance at the training. He contended that their voices must be heard and that the training could be postponed.

The call to action comes on the heels of a recent joint letter sent to the Prime Minister of Belize, which received only an acknowledgment in response, leaving many concerns from the unions unanswered for now. The lack of substantive engagement from government representatives has fueled discontent among union members, further motivating them to rally for their rights.

The demonstration will coincide with Friday’s opening of the National Assembly at the Sir Edney Cain Building in central Belmopan.
