By Aaron Humes: In the first hours of Commissioner of Police Richard Rosado’s tenure, the Belize District has seen no less than three murders and a fourth attempted murder.
While one of the killings, the Labour Day night shooting of Carlos Avelar on Coney Drive, has no links to the other incidents, it appears the attempted murder of Jimmy Rojas on Saturday night led to bloodshed outside of Belize City rather than in the Old Capital as expected.
This afternoon Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding Eastern Division, said police are investigating potential gang involvement in all three incidents – Rojas’ shooting and the murders of Aaron Lindo in Double Head Cabbage and after noon, that of Nelson Henry in Ladyville, although officially no motive has been uncovered in either of today’s murders.
ACP Romero said Police are looking at all angles and have stepped up patrols both in the River Valley and in Belize City.
But he would not say if a State of Emergency would be declared as was narrowly avoided in March during the run-up to the General Elections.
